Top 6 Tips for Becoming a Successful Project Manager

by admin

Successfully managing a project relies on you being good at what you do. In many ways, you’ll need to be a Jack or Jill of all trades encompassed within the project (at least to some degree) – or at the very least, to have a level of understanding about them. That’s a pretty tall order, but we think these top six tips will help you to be the best project manager you can be, and keep your projects running efficiently for ultimate project success.

Six Top Tips for Project Management Success
1. Collaborate for ultimate success. Face it – if the entire team does not succeed, you will not, and not one person involved in the project, no matter how hard they work as individuals, will look good. Resist the urge to leave those less skilled or productive behind or to control it all. Collaborate and bring everyone along for the ride with you.
2. Be clear on what your role as manager is. It might seem obvious to you, but people harbor different thoughts regarding what the real role of the project manager is. Be clear with your team members in regards to just what they can expect from you, and what they cannot as well.
3. Be clear on each individual’s role. Similarly, all team members should be clear on what their personal roles and responsibilities are, and those of the other team members. With a clear road map of what is being done by whom, you’ll preempt repetition and each person should be able to know just where to turn for their own needs.
4. The first step matters. Often, project managers and team members think the early organizational stages are of little importance, because the real production and result is usually experienced later on. However, the earliest stages are where the foundation is set, and where all the most important and biggest impacting decisions are made. So yes, it matters, and yes, people need to know that and to respect that and give the earliest phases their due attention.
5. Be prepared for conflict and resolution. You’re working with several dynamic people, all handpicked for their unique attributes and skills. All different. Expect and anticipate conflict. Know that it will arise, be sure of it, and be prepared to handle it.
6. Be an excellent time manager. As project manager, you are not only managing your own time, but you are also taking a hand in managing the time of others – some who may not be very good time managers at all. Brush up on your time management skills to keep yourself, your team members, and your project on track.
To be sure, the role of the project manager is a challenging one; but it is a rewarding one for the right type of person, too. With a positive attitude and these six tips, and with a healthy dose of dedication to your success, you’ll make your job as project manager both more successful and more enjoyable.
